How to Save Money on Labor Day Weekend in San Diego

It’s almost the three day Labor Day weekend, looked upon as the unofficial end of the summer season. It means kids back in school, most family vacations behind us, and higher gasoline prices.

The Union Tribune headline says it all, Gas prices; The most expensive Labor Day we’ve ever seen in San Diego.”

We’ve all seen the gas price signs changing every day for more than a month now…with the price going up almost every day…and now about 35 cents higher than it was just a month ago…with the price heading into the holiday weekend at almost $5.40 a gallon.

That’s still about one dollar less than our all time record high in October of last year when we were paying an average of $6.43 a gallon. And let’s hope we’re not headed back that high.

So why does gas cost so much in San Diego County you might ask?

The analysts point to what seems like the usual and endless maintenance and repair at California’s refineries.  You add to that the state’s environmental regulations and an increasing reliance on foreign oil…and you get higher gas prices.

While the explanation may tell us why, it’s not making us feel any better. But it may prompt more of us to stay in San Diego for the Labor Day weekend and avoid the backups on the 5 and the 15 and keep more money in the bank instead of the gas tank.
