Three Shutdowns Possible This Weekend

The news this weekend could be about three shutdowns. One we know will happen. Another is very likely to happen. And one could very well happen.

The one we know is happening is the shutdown by Cal Trans of the northbound lanes of the 5 from National City through the downtown area from 9 tonight till 5am Monday to finish repairs of the bridge decking of the freeway.

And then there is a very likely shutdown this weekend and probably before Sunday. It will be the shutdown of the season by the San Diego Padres when the team is expected to be officially eliminated from contention in the post season. Fans have been hoping it wouldn’t happen but knew that it would.

And of then of course there is the now real possibility of a federal government shutdown as of midnight Saturday night unless a contentious Congress can somehow figure out a way to come to some kind of agreement to avoid it.

If that shutdown does happen, millions of Americans will feel it, from hundreds of thousands of military and other federal workers not getting paid to the many others affected by it.

Cal Trans will do their job on the freeway shutdown. The Padres can’t do much at this point to stop a shutdown of their season. But Congress can do something to avoid the government shutdown…if only they would do it.
