What is Lucky About Friday the 13th

On a day like today, the last Friday the 13th of 2023, and in a year like this one, with wars and crime and political divisiveness, it may be tempting to worry about a day that is seen as an unlucky day.

But when you look into the history of how Fridays that occur on the 13th of a month got the reputation of being unlucky, it may not really by an unlucky day at all.

While one explanation has been that because there were 13 people at Last Supper, Jesus and 12 disciples the night before he was put to death, 13 became a number that foresaw bad things happening.

But there are others who say Friday the 13th is just a convenient milestone for people who are looking to trace bad luck to a certain cause—but there’s nothing special about the date itself.

And when you consider that in some countries, such as Italy, 13 is considered a lucky number…and that there are a lot of people you run into who say the number 13 is a lucky one for them, this idea of Friday the 13th being an unlucky day is more of a made up myth than anything else.

And besides, with Fridays seen as the best day of the week because it’s the last day of the work week, it’s probably a better idea today to just say TGIF than trying to avoid stepping on sidewalk cracks or not walking under a ladder.
