The Warnings Before Historic Storm Devastated Neighborhoods

The stories of what happened in multiple San Diego neighborhoods a week ago on Monday January 22nd are still coming in.

The scenes of devastation are hard to believe they could happen in San Diego where we are known for having America’s finest weather.

You’ve seen the videos showing the quickly rising water, the flash floods carrying cars down a river of flood water, the people on the roofs of their homes to escape the water, several feet inside their homes, everything destroyed.

Despite the forecasts leading up to last Monday calling for a maybe a couple of inches of rain, much more came and in a matter of only a few hours.

But there were warnings. At least there were warnings, recent ones, about the city’s flood control infrastructure not being in the shape it should be.

Just last month, city officials said this in a report,  “Age, deferred maintenance and underfunding of the storm drain system, poses a risk of flooding and catastrophic failure.”

And that’s exactly what happened a week ago. We can only hope that things change and quickly...because more rain is coming.
