A resident shot and killed a man suspected in a home invasion attempt in Oceanside,
Oceanside Police said officers were sent to a home on Diamond Circle shortly before 7:30 Monday night.
According to police, two residents -- a male and a female -- were inside the house when an unknown man armed with a rock and a stick entered the backyard and then made his way through a bedroom sliding door. Police said the female resident was in the bedroom when the intruder entered.
Police said the intruder threw the rock at the male resident and hit him in the face.
The injured resident then grabbed a gun and fired at least three shots, striking the intruder once in the chest. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released but police say he was 22 years old.
Police at the scene told reporting partner 10News the resident who fired the shots was not arrested. The shooting is being investigated by the Oceanside Police Department's Crimes of Violence Unit as a potential self-defense incident.
