Just days two days after the San Diego Convention Center was jammed with Comic-Con fans, Petco Park was packed with its biggest ever crowd for a Padres game.
Not surprising given the fact that the Padres were playing the dreaded Dodgers from Los Angeles. Tonight’s second game against the Dodgers is likely to see at least as many fans fill the ballpark.
With L-A already now the home of the former San Diego Chargers and all the worries about L-A might one day taking away Comic-Con, the long rivalry between San Diego and Los Angeles is only growing stronger.
All of us who live in San Diego know why we like it here better than the sprawling city of L-A. It’s a nice place to visit but not as nice a place as San Diego in which to live.
We may not have all the big sports teams L-A has and we may not get as much attention as L-A does, that’s okay with us.
So, when the Dodgers come to town, Padre fans fill Petco Park to yell and pray for their home team to “beat L-A.”
That battle cry was heard last night coming from in and around the ballpark and across the Gaslamp and will again be heard tonight.
After all we are America’s finest city. And thankfully not L-A.
