New Study: What Americans Say They Believe

A new poll is out, not about the presidential candidates but about what Americans think about trust in American institutions and American politics.

Not surprisingly, this new study found that trust in institutions overall is low but that even fewer Americans say they trust government and the media.

But what may be surprising is that the lack of trust spreads across party lines.

The poll found that only 14 percent of Republicans say they trust government and only a little over a third of Democrats say they trust government.

The survey also about that about 40 percent of Democrats and 16 percent of Republicans say they trust the media.

But what the poll also found is that what people said they believe and what they say privately are different, with 61 percent of Americans admitting to self-silencing or keeping their true opinions on sensitive topics to themselves.

So this new poll suggests that while the country is politically divided on many issues, we may not be as divided as we think we are.

Could it be, If the results of this poll are correct, that maybe the fierce fighting among parties and the way some media portray it has led to many people saying things publicly, for the sake of party, that they may not fully believe.
