Turning the Page on Presidential Endorsements

This presidential election year may become known, among several other things, as the year of non-endorsements by the nations newspapers.

With the word now that the San Diego Union has joined the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post along with the USA Today and some 200 other Gannett owned newspapers not making endorsements in the 2024 presidential race…..things could be changing.

It’s something that has probably never really happened before to this extent in modern times.

The executive editor of the MediaNews Group that owns the San Diego Union Tribune told The Times of San Diego, “Our view is that endorsing in these races only further polarizes an already divided electorate without moving the public discourse forward in a meaningful way,”

Some are calling these decisions by so many newspapers not to endorse either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris a bad thing while some are calling it a good thing.

Some say that because the race is so tight, newspaper endorsements could help the few undecided voters make up their minds but enough to affect the outcome in the race. Others say newspaper endorsements don’t  affect the outcome in a direct way anyway.

We won’t really know no matter how the election turns out. But it appears we could have turned the page on the age of newspapers endorsing presidential candidates.
