Behind Bars — And Dying

A new report is shedding light on San Diego County Jail in custody deaths.

The independent review looked at 179 deaths from 2011 to 2024, and found San Diego County had the highest jail death rate among large counties in California. The most deaths were reported at the San Diego Central Jail and the Vista Detention Facility.

The report from the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board, shows many people died within the first few days after booking, when medical checks happen.

It also found deaths dropped when there were more supervisors on duty, and recommends better staffing, less crowding and closer monitoring of inmates.

The Sheriff's Office reports some changes are already underway, and the oversight board is expected to push for more fixes based on the findings.
