California Gas Relief Deal Reached, Here's How Much You'll Get and When

A plan to provide direct gas relief payments to California taxpayers has been reached by Governor Newsom and state legislators. In a statement released on Sunday, Newsom, Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said, “California’s budget addresses the state’s most pressing needs, and prioritizes getting dollars back into the pockets of millions of Californians who are grappling with global inflation and rising prices of everything from gas to groceries.”

Legislative hearings for the deal are scheduled for Monday morning, when final approved is expected.

HOW MUCH: Payment amounts are based on income and family size.

  • Individual tax payers who earn up to $75,000 a year would receive $350, while joint tax payers earning up to $150,000 would receive $700.
    • If individual or joint tax filers have at least one dependent, they would receive an additional $350.
  • Individual tax payers who earn between $75,001 and $125,000 would receive $250, while joint tax payers earning between $150,001 and $250,000 would receive $500.

WHEN and HOW:

State Direct Deposit or Debit card recipients could see payments by late October. California's Franchise Tax Board expects that remaining rebates could be issued by the end of the year or by early 2023.

The relief payments will cost up $9.5 billion and are part of a larger $17 billion relief package that includes rent and utility payment assistance for eligible Californians, as well a suspension of the state’s sales tax on diesel fuel.
