First Monkeypox Case In California, CDC Is Confirming

An individual in Sacramento who recently returned from a trip to Europe has monkeypox symptoms.

The Sacramento County Division of Public Health is investigating the case and awaiting confirmation by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

The Public Health Department says the case represents very little risk to the general public since the patient is isolated in their home and has not been in contact with others.

  • Monkeypox Symptoms

After being infected, monkeypox symptoms can take seven to 14 days to appear and can last anywhere from two to four weeks. Symptoms include:

  • fever
  • headache
  • muscle aches
  • backache
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • chills
  • exhaustion
  • rash or lesions - these typically appear 3 days after signs of fever, starting on the face and spread to other parts of the body
  • How Monkeypox Is Spread

The monekypox virus spread by entering broken skin, the respiratory tract, or mucous membranes. Respiratory droplets can't travel more than a couple of feet.

Vaccines are available to treat the virus. In addition to using a smallpox virus, a new variation has been developed for monkeypox but it must be ordered through the CDC.

The CDC has confirmed one case of monkeypox in Massachusetts. Four other cases of orthopoxvirus have been confirmed in New York, Florida and Utah, and have yet to be confirmed as monkeypox..
