Income Tax Deadline Extended To July 15

The U.S. Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced on Saturday that the deadline for filing your 2019 Federal Income Tax Return has been extended from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. The state of California will utilize the same extended filing date.

On March 18, 2020 the California Franchise Tax Board announced,“The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting life for people and businesses statewide,” said State Controller Betty T. Yee. “We are further extending tax filing deadlines for all Californians to July 15." The extension includes:

  • 2019 tax returns
  • 2019 tax return payments
  • 2020 1st and 2nd quarter estimate payments
  • 2020 LLC taxes and fees
  • 2020 Non-wage withholding payments

The revised Federal filing date applies to all taxpayers, including individuals, trusts and estates, corporations and other non-corporate tax filers as well as those who pay self-employment tax.

No penalties or interest will be incurred when filing by the July 15, 2020 deadline regardless of the amount owed.

If you believe you are owed a refund, you are strongly encouraged to file your return as soon as possible, the IRS says that more refunds are still being issued within 21 days. "Even with the filing deadline extended, we urge taxpayers who are owed refunds to file as soon as possible and file electronically," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. 

The IRS will continue to monitor issues related to the COVID-19 virus, and updated information will be posted on aspecial coronavirus pageon IRS.gov.
