It's been a long and difficult couple of months in America's Finest City, but for the first time in months, San Diego reported less than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases a day. The February 2 report showed 926 new cases, based on data submitted on February 1.
Although still in California's purple tier of restrictions, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency published this latest chart showing the downtrend.
The explosion of cases the county experienced in December and January is attributed to increased exposure during holiday gatherings, travel and activities. As case rates have finally declined health officials worry that gathering for the Super Bowl will become new "Super spreader events" that will cause case rates to surge.
San Diego County began tracking case rates on February 14, 2020. Since that date a total of 240,050 total cases have been reported, 10,255 hospitalizations and 2,629 deaths have been attributed to the COVID-19 virus.
