The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency states that approximately 70,000 reported cases of child abuse and neglect are reported in San Diego County annually.
Home Start has been in San Diego 45 years providing therapy, counselors and parenting programs.
One of the programs is the Parent-Child-Interactive-Therapy (PCIT) program.
Each day, Home Start therapist’s utilize the research-proven therapy technique known as PCIT to break the cycle of child abuse, strengthen families, and protect children.
PCIT utilizes one-way mirrors and hidden earpieces, in order to let staff observe and coach mothers playing with their children in 5 adjacent, specially-designed play areas.
The emphasis is on changing negative parent/caregiver child patterns.
Parents learn skills through PCIT didactic sessions, and, using a transmitter and receiver system, the parent/caregiver is coached in specific skills as he or she interacts in specific play with the child.
Founded in 1972, Home Start Inc., is a 501(c)(3) a non-profit agency that offers comprehensive solutions to ensure children’s safety and healthy development.
