Why Some Dog Owners Need Some Training

Anyone who’s ever been bitten by a dog or a dog owner who’s dog has been attacked by another dog was probably not surprised to see a recent report in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The report looked into the number of tickets issued in San Diego over the last five years to people for not having their dog on a leash.

It turned out that there were more off-leash dog tickets given out in Pacific Beach than in any other in community San Diego.

Not surprisingly, the other two areas of the city where most of the citations issued for not having their dogs on a leash were given out to dog owners in Mission Bay Park and Balboa Park.

The law requires leashes on any “animal, including fowl, or bird of any kind apparently as well” in city-owned spaces outside of city-designated off-leash dog parks and training areas.

The tickets start at $50 bucks and can go as high as $400 dollars.

There’s been plenty of reaction to this report on the ticketing of dog owners for not having a leash on their animal with letters to the editor and comments on line.

One writer saying, “These owners think they are above the law and forget that their dogs are still animals and unpredictable.”

And some of the comments have come from other dog owners who have had their own dog hurt by someone else’s dog not on a leash.

A dog may be man’s best friend, but some dog owners need to learn how to be better friends to other people who can become victims to their lack of responsibility.
