POLL: Is There Trouble for Soccer City?

Is there trouble in river city for Soccer City?

Just three days after San Diego’s mayor officially endorsed the proposal and called for it to be put on a special election ballot in November, comes word from a different elected official at City Hall.

San Diego’s City Attorney puts out her analysis of the proposed development from FS investors for the Qualcomm site in Mission Valley. The proposal for a soccer stadium for an MSL pro soccer team that they say could also be used for Aztec football along with apartments and condos, shops, offices and restaurants and a river park.

In her 27 page analysis of the Soccer City plan, City Attorney Mara Elliot raises concerns about what she says are contradictions and a lack of clarity that she says could lead to costly lawsuits.

The group supporting the Soccer City project says not a problem, that those concerns can be resolved in a lease the developers would negotiate with Mayor Faulconer if the plan is approved by voters.

The city attorney’s concerns about the Soccer City proposal come just a couple of weeks or so before the City Council has to decide what to do with it.  Put it on the ballot at a special election in November, or on the ballot in an already scheduled election next year.

There are some council members already expressing concern about the Soccer City plan and of course San Diego State has ended its talks with the developers saying the plan is not in their or the city’s best interests.

There is also talk now of other talked about proposals coming forward soon for the Qualcomm stadium property.

So while there may indeed be some trouble in river city for Soccer City, let’s hope this story of whatever happens in Mission Valley has a happy ending for the citizens of San Diego.
