You may have heard it said a lot yesterday. "Happy" Memorial Day.
If you watched the cable news channels, or local TV, you heard news anchors and talk hosts say it as they welcomed someone on to their program on the holiday.
And if you were on social media yesterday, maybe you saw some of the posts from some people who questioned saying Happy Memorial Day.
On a day set aside to remember those who have lost their lives in war and a day filled with solemn ceremonies and visits to military cemeteries, many of them shown on the news programs, some on Facebook were saying it’s disrespectful to say Happy Memorial Day, with one post saying it’s dumb.
So is it proper to wish someone to be happy on Memorial Day?
With all the attention things like it being the unofficial start of summer, and all the attention beach crowds and travel, and all the excitement for some surrounding the Indianapolis 500, it becomes easy to think of Memorial Day as just another holiday, a day off from work and a three day weekend.
And forget what the day is all about.
Having forgotten to put up the American flag outside our home Monday morning until almost the end of the day, you feel a little guilty.
Especially when you don’ realize it until taking a walk around the block with your two little grand-girls and having them ask you about all the flags in front of the houses we passed by.
The American flag went up on the house as soon as we returned. And thanks to them, it was a happier and more meaningful Memorial Day.
