VIDEO: Woman Burned in El Cajon Fire Next to School

Fire at Teatro community in El Cajon

A woman believed to be in her 60's suffered significant burns and smoke inhalation Monday morning when a fire broke out in a two-story home in the Teatro gated community of homes at Broadway and Third just before 8 a.m.  The fire spread to an adjacent home. that was also damaged.  Fire officials estimated the damage at approximately $500 thousand dollars.  The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The homes that were on fire are located next to Greenfield Middle School. Fire fighters kept the flames from igniting palm trees close by that could have threatened cars in the school parking lot and even school classrooms if winds had blown embers toward the school.

A Heartland Fire spokesman told KOGO News at the scene they got multiple 911 calls including one from the tower at the Gillespie Field airport several miles away as black smoke filled the sky above the residential community and the school where students were just arriving for the start of classes.

Firefighters had the fire knocked down within 20 minutes, but were called back to the home just before Noon when flames erupted from the roof of the home apparently after being reignited.
