The FAA and National Transportation and Safety Board are investigating the cause of a single-engine plane crash in a Clairemont neighborhood shortly after the plane took off from Montgomery Field Saturday afternoon.
The pilot of the plane radioed that he had engine failure and soon after, the plane crash-landed onto a baseball field at Lafayette Elementary School and then skidded for more than 100 yards before smashing through a fence and into a home on Chandler Drive.
Two of the four people on the plane died and two others were injured. The house caught fire and was destroyed but no one was home at the time of the crash and no one on the ground was hurt. But authorities said two dogs in the house died.
