Attorney General Jeff Sessions is standing by tougher immigration policies.
Speaking in San Diego today, Sessions said it is not his intent to separate families. He insisted that a parent who tries to smuggle a child across the border will face prosecution and separation from the child.
Sessions said Americans have been pleading for a lawful system of immigration for decades.
He said the border is not open and argued that a failure to enforce immigration laws would be an affront to law-abiding Americans.
