San Diego Has One Of Few ER's In U.S. For Seniors

UC San Diego Health's Gary and Mary West Emergency Department is just one of eight emergency departments in the entire U.S. to receive the Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation by the American College of Emergency Physicians. It is also the first one in California.

The accreditation also acknowledges the superior, tailored care provided to any senior who arrives in the UC San Diego Health emergency department at the Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla. They are treated by specialists in geriatric medicine when they are admitted to the ER.

Local philanthropists Gary and Mary West provided an $11.8 million grant through their foundation to UC San Diego Health to create the state-of-the-art Gary and Mary West Emergency Department at Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, where specialized geriatric care has been available since the hospital opened in 2016.

Listen to our interview with Dr. Vaishal Tolia, the medical director of the Emergency Department at UC San Diego and the director of the Senior Emergency Care Unit at Jacobs Medical Center.
