Investigators Now Say Fire Near Safari Park Was Not Arson

San Diego Metro Arson Strike team investigators said Tuesday afternoon that they have determined that the Cloverdale Fire that threatened the San Diego Zoo Sarari Park in the San Pasqual Valley Monday was not intentionally set after all.

A statement released by San Diego Fire Rescue says "the original determination from SDFD metro arson strike team investigators yesterday was that the fire was intentionally set. After the investigators interviewed several witnesses today, the investigation evolved and they have determined that this fire was not intentionally set. It was caused by the rim of a tire that was throwing sparks into the brush along the side of the road.  Multiple fires along the San Pasqual Valley corridor along wit multiple points of origin had the investigative team thinking intentional yesterday."

Fire officials say the Cloverdale fire stands at 100 acres burned and as of 2:30 p.m.Tuesday afternoon, fire crews had achieved 65% containment.
