Two Jump From Window After Fire Rips Through Lakeside Apartment

Two people were taken to the hospital Monday morning after their Lakeside apartment went up in flames. Fire broke out around 3:30 at the Mapleview Apartments on Mapleview and Ashwood Streets. A mother and her two daughters, ages 12 and 21, lived in the apartment where the fire started.

The two daughters had to jump from a second story window to escape the flames. The mother was rescued by Lakeside Fire Protection District firefighters. The three women were taken to the hospital, two of them having minor injuries.

Firefighters arrived and found thick black smoke and flames coming from a second-floor unit in the 12-unit apartment complex. Firefighters knocked down the flames in around 15 minutes. The fire damaged six apartment units and the American Red Cross was called in to help 16 people and two dogs arrange for alternate lodging, the division chief said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
