Why San Diego's New Vehicle Habitation Law Will Not Solve Homelessness

The new ordinance passed by the San Diego City Council this week after a long debate and lots of testimony is not exactly getting the same reaction from everyone.

The new Vehicle Habitation law is designed to keep people from living in their cars, trucks or TV’s on the streets of the city and parking their vehicles and sleeping in their vehicles.

The problem is especially a problem in some of the beach communities which already face problems with street parking during the summer days anyway.

The debate is over the new law’s role in the fight against homelessness.

Homeowners and businesses don’t want people who live in their vehicles in front of their property.

People who are homeless and some homeless advocates say the two and soon to be three designated parking lots the city has where people can park and live in their vehicles aren’t enough.

So once again there is disagreement over the best way to help solve the continued problem of lots of people who are homeless in San Diego.

Despite the recent report on the number of homeless dropping by a few hundred countywide from last year, there are still thousands of people who are homeless in our community. Some in shelters, some on the streets and in the parks and some in vehicles.

And that means solving the problem of homelessness is sure to be a top issue
