WATCH: Sighs of Relief But Still Some Worries After Tariffs Called Off

This Monday morning has brought with it huge sighs of relief among business leaders and many politicians on both sides of the border.

On Friday morning, it was looking like today would be the day that tariffs were slapped on all products from Mexico.

But that ended with the President’s tweet Friday night that he had pulled back the tariffs after the Mexican government agreed to take more action to stem the flow of migrants from Central America illegally crossing the U.S border.

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and other business leaders along with top Republican leaders in Congress who were threatening to block the President’s tariffs, are smiling again.

In Mexico meantime, President Lopez Obrador came to Tijuana just hours after the news that the tariffs would not happen and gave what was described as a rousing speech that brought some of the estimated 20,000 people to tears. The Mexican president’s speech was about dignity and friendship.

Analysts are saying President Trump got some of what he wanted in his deal with Mexico and President Lopez Obrador got some of what he wanted.

And for San Diego and Tijuana’s economies, which are so tied together on each side of the busiest border crossing in the world, it was what was wanted and needed.

What happens now with President Trump now threatening to put the tariffs back on if Mexico doesn't do what he says they have agreed to do. One veteran analyst of U.S. Mexico relations said the Mexican government policy has often been to "always say yes but never say when."
