The last thing we probably need in today’s already divisive political climate is another thing to fight about.
But the latest fights in the never-ending NIMBY vs YIMBY battles in San Diego County are signs of that war heating up.
There have always been citizen drives to stop certain developments and projects because they believe there are bad for their neighborhood or community, the Not in My Backyard forces they’re called.
But now the increasingly vocal Yes in My Backyard forces are emerging in San Diego.
The approval by county supervisors of a new housing project east of Chula Vista with more than one thousand homes and their approval of the Chinese Bible Church’s, new 90-thousand square foot so-called mega church in the North County both happened despite strong opposition from people who live in those areas.
Despite filling the county supervisors hearing room, and both sides having good arguments, both projects were okayed, the YIMBY crowd winning over the NIMBY crowd.
These latest developments come after San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer had already fueled the debate with his proposal to build more high-density housing in local neighborhoods with reduced parking spaces…which fired up the NIMBY’s and emboldened the YIMBYs.
And with the high cost of buying or renting in the county, and concerns over wildfire risks, along with a desire to preserve our way of living, get ready for more of NIMBY’s vs. the YIMBY’s.
