INTERVIEW: Why San Diego's Model Railroad Depot is NOT Leaving the Station

It sometimes can seem as if many of our favorite things about living in San Diego are going away.

Such things as longtime popular restaurants that that go out of business or the impending departure of Seaport Village, or the Shamu show at SeaWorld or even the Chargers, things that we used to love.

Most of the changes that happen are chalked up to progress. But there are some things that just shouldn’t go away.

Take for instance, an attraction in San Diego’s Old Town that hasn’t been around that long, but represents something that has been around for many decades.

It’s the Model Railroad Depot in Old Town, located on San Diego Avenue, which has become a symbol of days gone by that a lot of us wish never would go away.

And that’s why it was welcome news this month when we learned that the Model Railroad Depot, that was about to shut its doors had been saved through the unlikeliest of circumstances.

All it took was for a young couple named David and Mana and their two-year old son to visit this train lover’s paradise for fate to take over. They met the man who started it and owned it, Gary Hickok and it happened.

He’s a lawyer and she owns a marketing company and they never imagined owning a very unique 2,000 square foot model railroad set up. And yet they do now.

As David put it to the San Diego Union Tribune, When we first came in, we just had this feeling of delight…being here is all about slowing down and taking time… that’s something everybody needs in life.”
