San Diego County health officials Tuesday reported 173 new COVID-19 cases, for a new total of 3,314, with five more people dying from the virus..
The most recent victims were between the ages of 56 and 87. As of Tuesday, 118 county residents have died due to the coronavirus. All but three had existing health problems.
Officials also gave an update on efforts to boost its testing capacity and to be able to track those with COVID-19. Officials say they hope to be able to conduct about 5,200 tests a day. Two new drive-up testing sites have opened in Chula Vista and Escondido. The county also has begun testing individuals living at skilled nursing facilities. On Monday, the county conducted 2,545 tests for the coronavirus — about 1,700 more tests than Sunday.
