After saving their species by means of near-constant procreation, a group of Galápagos tortoises has returned to their native habitat in Española.
This includes Diego, the former resident at the San Diego Zoo, and nearly 100-year-old Española tortoise, who copulated so very much, that he fathered around 800 offspring. That’s about 40% of the tortoise population on the island now.
The tortoises captive breeding program started in the mid-1960s when the population decreased to 15. today...the population on Galapagos is now around 2,300, so the captive breeding program is finished...and the tortoises returned to their natural habitat...where it is believed they will continue to copulate.
