How to Make the Coming Holidays Happy During the Pandemic

The chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors said it best, “The truth is that people are tired of this pandemic and, unfortunately, they’re letting down their guard.”

Those are the words of Greg Cox in trying to explain why the coronavirus case rate is on the rise. And why San Diego County is on the brink of having to close down some things again and fall from the red tier to the purple tier, the most restrictive on the state’s reopening watch list.

No one wants indoor dining and other indoor activities at businesses and places of worship to have to shut down again.

You’ve heard the words of another county supervisor, Jim Desmond, who is pleading for things that are open to stay open.

But you’ve also probably seen the video of crowds of people gathered together too close together and many without masks.

And you’ve also heard California’s top public health official, Dr. Mark Ghaly, say that we’re all looking forward to the upcoming holiday season to brighten up what has been a year infected with a pandemic that just won’t go away.

Supervisor Desmond says we have to learn to live with the coronavirus and that’s what we’ve been doing for about eight months now.

But if we do want our holiday season to be bright, it would be good to remember what else Supervisor Cox said, “We need to do better, we need to do a lot better, and we can do better.”

In other words, making the season bright this year will mean masking, distancing and hand washing to help keep the COVID Grinch away.
