2020 Presidential Debate Schedule and Topics

The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) determines the location, dates, and format of each debate. The remaining events will be staggered throughout October and can be heard on NewsRadio 600 KOGO in San Diego, via lia stream on iHeartRadio and seen on multiple networks.

  • October 7 | Vice-Presidential Debate | 6:00 - 7:30 pm PT

Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris will debate at Kingsbury Hall at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The debate will be moderated by Susan Page, USA Today's Washington bureau chief.

The debate will last 90 minutes and will feature nine, 10-minute segments. According to the CPD, "The moderator will ask an opening question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond, and will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic."

  • October 15 | Second Presidential Debate | 6:00 - 7:30 pm PT

President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden will meet at Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. The debate will be moderated by Steve Scully, the political editor at C-SPAN. This debate will have a town-hall-style format that includes questions for undecided voters from South Florida. The moderator will have offer an additional minute per question to prompt further discussion.

According to the CPD, "The second presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which the questions will be posed by citizens from the South Florida area. The candidates will have two minutes to respond to each question and there will be an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate further discussion. The town meeting participants will be uncommitted voters selected under the supervision of Dr. Frank Newport, Senior Scientist, Gallup."

  • October 22 | Third Presidential Debate | 6:00 - 7:30 pm PT

The final 2020 Presidential Debate will take place at Belmont University in Nashville. President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden will be joined by moderator Kristen Welker, an NBC News White House Correspondent.

The final debate will follow the same format as the first debate on September 29, which was divided into six segments of approximately 15 minutes each.

According to the CPD, "As always, the moderators alone will select the questions to be asked, which are not known to the CPD or to the candidates. The moderators will have the ability both to extend the segments and to ensure that the candidates have equal speaking time. While the focus will properly be on the candidates, the moderator will regulate the conversation so that thoughtful and substantive exchanges occur."
