Election Day Results: Dr. Akilah Weber Wins Assembly Seat

It looks like Dr. Akilah Weber will be the new California State Assembly member from the 79th District in San Diego County.

With 100 percent of the results now being reported as of Wednesday morning by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office in the special election Tuesday, Dr. Weber, a Democrat, has just over 52-percent of the votes. Republican Marco Contreras has 33-percent. The winning candidate needs only 50-percent plus one. While the results are not likely to change, interim Registrar of Voters Cynthia Paes said there are still some ballots to be counted.

Once the election results are confirmed, Dr. Weber, who works as a physician at Rady Children's Hospital and who has served on the La Mesa City Council since 2018, will replace her mother, Shirley Weber, who was nominated by Governor Newsom and then approved by the California State Assembly as Secretary of State. She replaced Alex Padilla, who was appointed by Newsom to replace now Vice-President Kamala Harris in the U.S. Senate.
