Man Shot and Killed by Police in Escondido

A man was shot and killed by a police officer in Escondido Wednesday morning.

Police say officers responding shortly after 7 a.m.to a call of a man hitting cars with a metal pole. The Escondido Police Department says the first officer who arrived at the scene at Broadway and 2nd Ave. approached the man who they say was carrying a "large metal object." The officer shot the man, striking him at least once. Details of what led up to the shooting were not released. Police say the man was given medical aid at the scene but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The name of the man who was shot and killed was not immediately released by police pending notification of his family. But Escondido Police described him as an adult white male.
