Free Summer School Program Launching For K-12 San Diego Unified Students

The San Diego Unified School (SDUSD) district is teaming up with The San Diego Foundation to offer a free summer school program to young San Diego students, reports KGTV.

The program is called "Level Up San Diego" and is offered to all K through 12 students.

"We’ve partnered with The San Diego Foundation to have our community-based nonprofits do enrichment and engagement programs for students in the afternoon. We’re very excited about what we’re building in the summer," said SDUSD board president Richard Barrera.

The goal of the program is to help students prepare for the 2021-22 school year after a challenging year of learning with the pandemic.

It will offer in-person learning on Monday through Friday mornings. Students will be able to participate in enrichment activities during the afternoon like drone flying and learning how to kayak.

The activities offered depends on each program, according to KGTV.

SDUSD usually only offers summer school to students who are struggling, but the Level Up program is offered to any student for free.

"About 80 percent of our schools are offering four days a week of instruction. Even over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had some schools that began offering two days a week that have now moved to four days a week," said Barrera.

Enrollment will start in late May and the program will begin on June 21st.
