This year on July 13 marks the 10-year anniversary of the death of Rebecca Zahua in Coronado.
According to CBS8, the attorney representing the Zahua family filed an amended complaint in the family's lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
The County of San Diego filed a demurrer, asking the judge to dismiss the lawsuit and the amended complaint seeks to keep it alive.
The family will continue the ongoing lawsuit against the sheriff's department over the release of investigatory records in the case.
“It’s taken a lot of energy, a lot of time, a lot of money, a lot of heartache, but the family is just as committed today as they were 10 years ago,” attorney Keith Greer said.
Zahua died at the Spreckels Mansion on July 13, 2011. She was found nude and bound in the home which was owned by her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai. While the sheriff's investigators determined that her death was suicide, her family believes it was murder.
Greer and the family claim the sheriff's department has not released all of its investigative records regarding the case.
In 2020, the family filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Bill Gore claiming that Gore only released evidence that would make Zahua's death look like a suicide.
“The system is definitely corrupt and whether that corruption starts with the sheriff or not, I think we'll find out over time,” said Greer.
