Monday's (October 4) thunderstorm in San Diego County set fire to several trees and buildings and left thousands of residents without power, according to NBC7.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) reported that power outages were impacting over 1,500 customers as of 7:45 A.M. on Tuesday, October 5. Which is a large improvement from the 13,000 customers affected on Monday night.
SDG&E said the severe weather caused most of the outages.
Impacted communities include Rainbow, Pala, La Mesa, Fallbrook, Oceanside, Escondido, Boulevard, Jacumba, North Park, Golden Hill, Mission Beach, Midway, Talmadge, Tierrasanta, and Morena.
NBC7 reports power restoration varied but the latest was an estimated 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, more than 2,000 in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were detected in Orange, San Diego, and Riverside counties.
Lightning-related fires sparked near the Navajo Road on-ramp at State Route 125, near Mount Helix, Rainbow Valley Boulevard in Fallbrook, Pacific Highway in Morena.
The fire near Mount Helix spread across trees and threatened homes.
“There were probably 30 to 40 palm trees involved with a lot of embers cast onto the homes that are here," San Miguel Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Roddey Blunt said. "All residents did a great job, they had hoses out and were doing what was best for their property."
