California lawmakers announced a proposal on Thursday morning that will give every taxpayer in the state a $400 gas rebate.
The $400 rebate is intended to alleviate the high cost of gas Californians pay because of added state taxes. If passed, the rebate would be issued to ALL individual taxpayers (regardless of whether they actually own or drive a car) because lawmakers say “they too have seen their living expenses increase due at least in part to the increased cost of gasoline.”
The proposal would cost the state $9 billion dollars, and would be funded by the California's surplus budget which holds in excess of $45 billion dollars.
The proposal has the support of state Assemblymembers Cottie Petrie-Norris, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Jesse Gabriel, Adam Gray, Jacqui Irwin, Evan Low, Chad Mayes, Blanca Rubio, Sharon Quirk-Silva and Carlos Villapudua.
