A woman was bitten by a shark Friday morning in the waters off Del Mar.
Lifeguards say the 50-year-old woman was bit on the upper thigh and was taken to a hospital with punctures and lacerations. She is stable and recovering according to a lifeguard spokesman.
Lifeguards near 17th street spotted the woman and a companion out in the water about 200 yards offshore about 10 a.m. and they acted as if there could be some kind of trouble.
The entirety of Del Mar’s beach, a mile in each direction of where it happened will be closed for at least 48 hours as a precaution. If the closure is not extended, the beach will reopen at 9 a.m. Sunday.
