MCAS Miramar Brush Fire Sparked by Training Exercise

A brush fire broke that broke out Tuesday afternoon at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar area happened during training. The fire started a little after 2:30 p.m. and the spread of the flames was stopped shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Officials with MCAS Miramar told KOGO News they have determined that the cause was a training exercise called EOD, an explosive ordinance disposal that went wrong.

They say it wasn't caused by Marine personnel but the Navy. Marine Public Affairs Officer 1st Lt. Jacoby Hawkins told KOGO News the fire spread from two acres to more than 105 acres in only 20-minutes. There were no injuries and no structures were threatened.

The Marines and Navy are conducting a joint investigation on how and why this happened.
