Man Rescued After Being Stuck in Hole on Sunset Cliffs

San Diego Fire Rescue crews on Friday freed a man who became trapped in a narrow tunnel under rocks on Sunset Cliffs in San Diego County after a challenging 18-hour rescue mission.

The man was first spotted on the cliffs shortly after 3:30 Thursday afternoon. About 11 a.m. Friday, rescue crews used a rope-and-pulley system and were able to finally hoist the man on a stretcher and onto the bluffs above the cliffs.

It's unclear how long the man tried to tunnel so he could create shelter, but San Diego Fire Rescue officials say that during that time he slid farther down and became wedged under a rock in the bottom of a tunnel about 12 to 15 feet into the hillside.

They said the man told them he had been screaming for days but were not sure how long he had been there. He was reported to have minor injuries.
