The Ocean Beach Pier suffered more damage over the New Year’s weekend during the battering by the extremely high surf.
Large waves of eight to 12 feet with sets up to 18 feet pounded the OB Pier which is nearly 60 years old. It already had been closed in October due to past damage.
A study by consultants in 2018 determined that the ongoing structural problems with the OB pier have caused it to reach the end of its useful service life. The found that potentially replacing the pier is the best option for it in the long-term, given the ongoing costs of repairs and the need to modernize the facility, as well as anticipating future sea-level rise.
The city says it has spent $1.7 million to repair the pier over the last few years.
An Ocean Beach Pier Task Force comprised of volunteers nominated by local advisory groups and representatives from the City of San Diego, has been formed to study the possibility of replacing the pier.
Clean Up of Boardwalks
The high surf and high tides combined to leave lots of sand covering some of the boardwalk along Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. City crews and lifeguards were out Tuesday shoveling sand of sections of the boardwalk.
