Governor Gavin Newsom Wednesday requested a Major Disaster Declaration from President Biden to support San Diego County as it recovers from severe winter storms in late January.
The Presidential Major Disaster Declaration request encompasses San Diego residents impacted by widespread flooding and devastation that resulted from storms between January 21 and January 23, which tragically killed three and significantly damaged more than 800 homes in primarily underserved communities where flood insurance coverage is exceptionally low. If approved, a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration will help people in the impacted counties through eligibility for programs and support that can include housing assistance, vehicle replacement, food aid, counseling, medical services and legal services.
Winter Storm Warning in Mountains
The National Weather Service has a Winter Storm Warning in place for San Diego County's mountain areas, with the current storm expected to produce snow through Thursday afternoon. The warning, for elevations 4,000 feet and above, is slated to run through 12 p.m. Thursday.
NWS officials said, "Heavy wet snow. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches with 10 to 14 inches on the highest peaks. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph tonight and early Thursday." Due to the traveling conditions, chains are being required for vehicles.
