One person is dead, six others were injured, and two people remain missing after a boating accident in the Connecticut River on Labor Day (September 2).
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the boat was returning from Block Island when it struck a break wall at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The 31-foot boat suffered significant damage in the crash, which sent several people into the water.
When rescuers arrived, they recovered the body of one man and rescued six others from the partially submerged vessel. Two others remain missing. Officials said that the operator of the boat was in critical condition. At least one of the patients has since been released from the hospital. No information was released about the condition of the other five people.
Authorities did release the identity of the victims.
Rescue crews resumed searching the river for the other two people who were missing after stopping around 2:30 a.m.
"We always hope for the best," Capt. Keith Williams, with the Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police, said at a press conference on Tuesday morning. "From what we're seeing from evidence, early stages ... it's most likely going to be a recovery."
