A 16-year-old was fatally shot while attempting to rob a man in Philadelphia using a toy gun. The Philadelphia Police Department said the teen and another suspect approached a man and his girlfriend on the street around 1 p.m. on Sunday (September 29).
The 16-year-old pressed the toy gun into the man's back and ordered him to hand over his keys, wallet, and any other valuables he had.
The suspect refused to cooperate and instead pulled out a gun and fired at the teen, striking him in the leg. The 16-year-old was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators recovered the gun at the scene and discovered it was just a toy. The victim, who was not injured, would not have known the gun was a toy when he used his legally owned firearm to shoot the teen.
"Having been pressed into the victim's back, there would have been no way for them to know that," Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace told WTXF.
Authorities are still searching for the second suspect.
