Suspect ID'd Minnesota Lawmaker, Husband Killed, 2nd Lawmaker, Wife Wounded

A former appointee of Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is being sought in connection with the assassination of a state lawmaker and the shooting of another, according to multiple sources.

Authorities say Vance Luther Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer when he shot state Senator John Hoffman and his wife in their home early this morning, leaving them seriously injured before moving on to former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman’s house. She and her husband were killed.

Police in Minnesota are searching for Boelter and Governor Walz has warned citizens not to attend political events today. 

Walz says the shootings were politically motivated and a list found in the suspect’s car also reportedly included the Governor, US Representative Ilhan Omar and Senator Tina Smith as well as others 

Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said that the lawmakers were shot by someone impersonating a police officer. He said the suspect had a full police uniform and a vehicle outfitted with lights

Both state legislators are members of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party. Bruley said the suspect left a manifesto with other lawmakers' names listed. Those lawmakers have been provided with security, he said.

The Trump administration responded to Saturday's shootings.

"I am closely monitoring developments in Minnesota after what appears to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers. The FBI is on the ground investigating this case alongside state and local partners. This horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Attorney General Pam Bondi said.
