A 26-acre brush fire Wednesday afternoon in the East County led to evacuation orders and warnings was 85-percent contained as of Freiday morning..
The fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. east of Steele Canyon High School, north of the 94 in the Jamul area.
Flames burned northeast toward homes and authorities cleared residents out of some neighborhoods east and north of the 94 and south of Jamacha Road, Willow Glen Drive and the Cottonwood golf course.
People in areas to the south and east of that perimeter -- including in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge and parts of North Jamul -- were advised to prepare to evacuate on short notice.
Ground crews, air tankers and water-dropping helicopters all took park in fighting the fire. There were no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries. The cause of the fire had not been determined as of early Wednesday evening.
