California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation Saturday which places restrictions on federal immigration officials’ operations at schools and hospitals in the the state.
The legislation also bans law enforcement agents from hiding their identities including by using masks.
ICE agents have been conducting illegal immigrant raids in California for the last several months at job sites, Home Depot parking lots, courtrooms, and near schools, some in San Diego County, but not on school campuses.
Speaking from a high school in Los Angeles Saturday, Gov. Newsom put his signature on five bills will limit schools and daycare centers from admitting ICE officials; restrict hospitals and health care facilities from sharing sensitive information, ban ICE agents from entering hospital emergency rooms without a warrant and require family notification when agents appear on school campuses. The measures also require law enforcement officials to display their badge numbers or names for identification.
