The First Woman and First Black San Diego School Superintendent Dies

Former San Diego Unified School Superintendent Dr. Bertha Pendleton died in Las Vegas this week at the age of 92.

Having grown up in 30s and 40s in segregated Alabama and the valedictorian at her high school graduation, she became the first woman and first Black person to head the San Diego School District.

Pendleton served as San Diego school superintendent from 1993 to 1998.
