San Diego Gas and Electric is now conducting inspections of its poles and wires with drones.
This is a new program for the utility company and the first of its kind in the nation. SDG&E says the drones check for damage to poles, lines and structures without having personnel climbing the pole or sending in a bucket truck.
They say the drones can also assess vegetation and spot wildfire risks before a fire strikes.
SDG&E says the drones will only be used to look at its own infrastructure, and not into people’s yards.
