Mysterious Booming Noise Heard Throughout San Diego County

From South Bay to Mira Mesa, San Diego County residents heard loud booms and reported that their windows were rattling on Tuesday afternoon.

While the cause has not been confirmed, there are two possibilities.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 2.6 magnitude earthquake near Maneadero in Baja California around 2:30pm.

Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base confirmed that they mortar rounds and artillery are being fired during exercises on the base from 6:00am until midnight on Tuesday. The exercises are taking place at the Whiskey/Zulu Impact area and the base says, "depending on atmospheric conditions, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away.”
